About The Levy's & McDonald's
Please sign in to see more.
Welcome to my tree my name is Mark Levy .

The information presented here has come from many resources and contributions from many individuals and researchers who have contacted me over the years. I have established this tree to share what I have gathered with others who are researching these names and associated family lines in order to further my knowledge of my ancestors and origins. I welcome any and all corrections and contributions to the family lines presented here unless otherwise stated. Permission to use the information and add it to this tree is assumed on all information that is sent to me. In all cases, I attempt not to publish pertinent information on living individuals such as dates and locations. Here those family members, researchers and sources of information can be recognised, and their contributions to the family history can be acknowledged. Such recognition is important, for no one genealogist is responsible for all the information gathered. Some contribute more than others, and the fullness of the acknowledgement can ensure that such efforts are not forgotten.

How was New South Wales formed by CONVICTS sent from England, you could say for petty crimes but still a crime on society. Why do people try to hide our Convict past if we didn't have one New South Wales wouldn't be what it is today. I have been lucky enough to find a few on my family tree and also on my wife's side.

I am working on the Family tree of the Levy's as this has been an interesting case with the arrival of the first Levy here in New South Wales Australia a Convict. He arrived as a Levy and passed away as a Thomas confusing yes indeed. With the help of Births, Marriage and Death Certificates we have been able to piece this all together.

Barnard Levy arrived here in Australia 1817 onboard the Morley as on his Ticket of Leave,he was sentenced in England under the name of Barnet Levi in September 1816 to life down under for pickpocketing a watch. When he landed in NSW he was sent to live in Windsor NSW to serve his time. He married a 15 year old Rebecca Devine in Windsor on the 17th May 1836. They then had 6 children Joseph 1838,Thomas 1842, Edward 1844, Henry 1847, Samuel 1849 and Hannah 1851 when they were Baptised the surname was spelt as Levey and Barnard's name became Barnet. Over the years in NSW Barnard has been known as Barnard/Bernard and Barnet.

Now Joseph and Thomas were the only ones to stay in NSW when Barnard and Rebecca and the other 4 children moved to Melbourne and used the surname of Thomas.
As did Thomas Levy when he stayed in NSW he changed his name to Alfred Thomas and this was used when he married and died but on his death papers it shows his parents as Barnard and Rebecca something he couldn't change.
Now when the children of Thomas Levy aka Alfred Thomas were born the children were put under the Thomas surname but when Thomas Levy aka Alfred Thomas passed away the children reverted back to using the Levy surname if they didn't I wouldn't be one.

Now on Barnet Thomas's Death in Victoria he is listed as Barnet Thomas and his parents as Barnet and Hannah.

And I would like to say a very special thank you to Wilma Strudwick for her book she completed The Woman of the House concerning The Levy's The Devine's and The Kelly's they were Grandmothers of ours.

And now that I know that their are two sides of my Levy/Thomas family I have been lucky enough to find Three Thomas cousin's that has been good to share information on both sides of this family.

I am also doing my wife's side the McDonald's we have found two ways of spelling the name of MacDonald and McDonald so please forgive us if your Mac or Mc surname is spelt incorrect.

I will update this site when more names come in as there are so many to list. I would like to thank the following people for their input into building this tree, Sandra Guthrie, Bronwyn O'Connor, Deborah Hodgson,Kerrie Sheather,June Hurst,Lynne Dickson,Elizabeth Mitchell,Jan Hearn and Leonore McDonald nee Hayward.
